What is the problem?

  •        Tail traps are very dangerous to possums. The possum will most likely die if they do not escape the tail trap, and if they do escape they will most likely be tail-less, which will effect their balance and lifestyle. One thing you can do to help is if you hire someone to get possums out of your home make sure they don’t use tail traps.
  •        Tree banding is where you wrap a piece of plastic or a slippery material on a tree so that possums and other animals can’t enter trees, and this is now happening all over the place. Some animals will leave to get food and then find they can’t go back up and sometimes they had left young in the tree.
  •       The culling of possums is tragic. Taking lives for the sake of a good night’s sleep? Can it be true? The answer is yes, it is very true, people complain and then the possums are blamed for it. Think if you were them, trying to scavenge for food and shelter because people are treating you cruelly. Imagine if you came home one day and found your loved ones killed because of people complaining! Is it humane? NO! Is it sensible? NO! Does it need to stop? What do you think?  I hope you make a good choice.
  •     Off leash dogs and cats are major threats to possums as they hunt them in parks and terrorising them making them feel unsafe. Possums hate this and they often die of fright alone. Luckily, people are fined up to $300 for dog and cat attacks.
  •     Relocation and possums are two words that don’t go together. Reason why: possums react terribly to relocation and often die from not knowing where to find food sources or from being attacked by other possums. If they have young they will move into other unoccupied areas, where they think is a sustainable place to live
  •      Cars one of the main killers of possums. You now will often see a dead possums lying on the road being squashed by cars. It is a putrid sight! You can help stop this, just by driving carefully near parks or forests or anywhere possums would like to live.
  •       There are many endangered species of possums for example the Pygmy Mountain Possum and Leadbeater's Possum. These possums are rare to find as they are critically endangered and endangered, and there was less than 1,000 in population at a time.
  •       And finally, the major cause of most of these problems - the people. Regular everyday people. Think about things like this. Who made the tail traps? I know it isn’t made naturally. What about the cars and possums lying dead on the road? I know cars are manufactured, and let’s see, what about relocation? Caused by what? People complaining about possums! Well let's see, endangered animals, often caused by lack of habitat, we stole it, some zoos won’t take in possums anymore, saying that they have a 'possum problem'. That's not the last one tree banding they don't grow on trees do they and off leash dogs and cats leading to many deaths of possums. Here's the last one I’m going to say. Culling, the menace to possums, what is it caused by? A massive amount of people complaining about a good night’s rest. Are lives more important than lives? I don't think so. But what about you?

The Leadbeater's possum

·       The Leadbeater’s possum, Victoria’s faunal emblem, is now an endangered animal.

·       After the 2009 bushfires there were less than 1000 left

·       Also after the 2009 bushfires they had only 40-50% of their habitat left, and that is the only area in the world where they are found.

·       Because of lack of sightings the Leadbeater’s possum was thought to be extinct for 52 years.

 A very cute Leadbeaters possum!

Mutilation of possums

IMPORTANT! LOOK AT THIS BEFORE READING!: Some of the following information is shocking. We recommend that parents read before letting their children see this. If you are a child, please let your parent/s read this before you.:

Today, while we were looking at The Age website, we found an article describing some horrific incidents in which possums have been treated with severe cruelty, for no reason other than being possums. Many people see possums as pests, but that is no good excuse for some of the things we heard about. The article, 'Possum mutilation on the rise: RSPCA', which was written by Alexandra Bolkas, was published on the 17th of October. Possums have been found in the Knox region with no paws or tails, apparantly caused by fishing wire traps, which tear paws and tails off when the possums try to escape. There have also been many possums poisoned with rat poison, and have needed treatment. Rheya Linden, an Animal Active campaigner, said that possums had also been deliberately hurt at Carlton North's Curtain Square park. She said that
“Over the past two years we've come across possums trapped and burnt alive in wheelie bins and this year we found a possum stabbed to death with the knife left in it.”

All our information came from: http://www.theage.com.au/environment/animals/possum-mutilation-on-rise-rspca-20121017-27pv5.html#ixzz29uHIo3Qv
If you are interested in the issue then please read the article yourself, as there is other information that was not used in the post.

Miki Bluethorn
